Freshman Career Expo - October 2009

Freshman Career Expo to be Held Oct. 28 at JCCC  

Representatives from 65 different career fields will be present at the Olathe District Schools 2009 Career Expo for ninth-grade students to be held from 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Regnier Center on the Johnson County Community College campus.

More than 1,800 ninth-grade students attend the event, which is intended to stimulate student interest in the wide variety of career clusters they may wish to explore. Students attending past Career Expos have reported that the event has been helpful and meaningful, according to Sue Sandbothe, California Trail Junior High counselor. Junior high counselors organize the Expo each year.

Career fields represented include environmental sciences, health careers, law, engineering, safety and law enforcement, fine arts, and many more, said Larry Katzif, California Trail principal and event chair.

"We are very appreciative of Johnson County Community College, which assists with underwriting the event," Katzif said. "They are providing the venue, the breakfast snacks and lunches for the career representatives, all at no charge. They have been great to work with."

Later in the day, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Regnier Center, eighth- and ninth-grade students — and their parents — are invited to learn more about the district's 17 different 21st Century High School programs, available to all Olathe district high school students. The 21st Century programs, unique to the Olathe district, offer hands-on, project-based learning in Aerospace & Engineering, Geosciences, Biosciences, e-Communication, and much more. The programs allow students to learn core subjects while pursuing their passion in a wide variety of real-world career fields.

The 21st Century Browse will be repeated from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the District Education Center, 14160 Black Bob Road, in the Board of Education room. Eighth- and ninth-grade students and their parents are invited.
