Driver's Education

The Olathe Public Schools offer state-approved driver's education courses that meet either in an after-school or summer school format. Ken Taylor, taylork@olatheschools.org, is the director of the programs. The program emphasizes defensive driving and the social responsibility of driving. Successful completion of this course, plus additional driving experience, will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license if they are 16 years old, or a restricted license if they are 15 years old. Cost is $225 for this half-credit course. The driver's education information line is (913) 780-7208.

After-school Program:

Students must be at least 14.5 years old by the first class. Priority for enrollment will be given to older students. It is recommended that students have their instruction permit from the state of Kansas before they start the class.

Classes are Monday through Friday (except for non-school days) from 5-7 p.m., with one hour of driving time approximately every other day between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Total classroom / driving time will be no longer than three hours per day.

There will be one session per year at each high school. Enrollment is limited to students from that high school. Enrollment will be selected chronologically with the oldest being enrolled first. Any unfilled positions will be taken from other high schools on a chronological basis.

The cost is $225. Successful completion of the course plus additional driving experience will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license or restricted license (depending on their age and length of time they've held a permit).

Students will be notified by phone if they have been selected for the program. Selection is based on their birth date, with the oldest students chosen first.

Classes will be offered in June and July. The emphasis is on defensive drving and the social responsibilities of driving. Successful completion of this course enables the student to procure a Kansas drivers license (16-year-old) or a restricted license (15-year-old). Those age 14 may only obtain an instructional permit. Students must have turned 14 by Jan. 1, 2011 to apply for the program. Those with a birth date of Jan. 1, 1997 through June 1, 1997 may be considered on a space available basis after the deadline day in May (to be determined).

Fees are $225 and each session equals one-half practical arts credit. Students outside the district may sign up for the program only if space is available after the deadline in May, for a cost of $265.

Information is made available at every Olathe middle school and high school on or about April 1 for that summer's session.
