Olathe North Names Football Coach
Feb. 3, 2012 ~ After an extensive search, Olathe North High School is pleased to announce the name of its new football coach. Gene Wier, former longtime Olathe North football coach, has been tapped to lead the team again. Wier was head football coach at Olathe North during the 1981-2002 seasons and taught at Olathe North from 1981-2003. During that time, he led the Eagles to six state championship titles. His career record of wins was 188-36 during his time at Olathe North.
"We are very excited about the hiring of Gene Wier as the head football coach at North," Olathe North Principal Connie Heinen said. "Obviously, he is a proven winner. More importantly, he clearly conveyed in his interview that his number one goal is to use football as a vehicle of achieving the district's vision of preparing students for their future. We look forward to welcoming Coach Wier back to the North family."
Wier has numerous accolades and awards under his belt. He was named 2002 National Coach of the Year, Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Metro Sports Coach of the Year three times, Kansas City Chiefs Coach of the Year three times, among many other honors.
"I feel humbled and honored to have the opportunity to return to the place that was my home for 31 years of my professional life," Wier said. "Olathe North is a special part of Olathe and has been and always will be where my heart is. I have truly enjoyed my experience in Texas and I am very appreciative for the nine years here. I truly believe it will enhance my ability to serve the students of Olathe North and the community in a better manner than when I was there before. I am looking forward to greeting the young people I will be working with."
Wier, who has bachelor's and master's degrees in Physical Education, will also teach physical education at North. He served as head football coach in Richland, Texas from 2003 to now. He will begin his duties in the district this summer. He will replace Pete Flood, who served as head football coach for six years.
